Meta-Tag Descriptions
|
 |
Most people believe that the Meta Description tags mean nothing on Google and/or the other top tier search engines. They do help in the ranking of the page web pages and are sometimes displayed in the SERP.
Without a good Meta-description the engines will scrape your web page for words that relate the query that was performed. This is NOT the best case scenario because you have no control over what the search engines will show to your potential customers about your site.
Best practices for writing Meta-descriptions are as follows:
- When possible, make them mirror the page titles. This practice strongly reinforces for the search engines the key words and phrases you are trying to rank on.
- Craft them to include these major points of your marketing message.
- Use a call to action “Buy the Best” or “Shop for”
- You can insert your branding message in the meta description
- Always use call to action to prompt the user to click through to your website
- If you have a tag line for you website and free space you can you it here
- Add pricing information if the character space is available. Descriptions with pricing information in them tend to get clicked on more than descriptions without it.
- Use related keywords and phrases. While your attempting to reinforce your main key words and phrases, the description attributes give you additional character space to work with (150 characters as opposed to 90 characters in the page titles) to allow you to semantically branch out your message.
