We are sometimes asked “Do I have to own my own domain, can’t I just use someone else’s store front like yahoo stores?”. The answer is always YES. There are so many reasons we will list them individually.
1. For Organic SEO purposes this is probably the most important. It will help you rank! The easiest way we can explain this is to use an example of a toy sore. Lets say the Domain name is a www.Toys.com because toys is in the domain name the search engines will automatically assume the site has something to do with toys. So when you start trying to rank for search terms like Toy Games, Baby Toys, Star wars toys the search engines already know you are relevant for any secondary term with the word toys because toys was in the domain name.
2. Your Email address, many people don’t consider a site to be real if they try to contact you and your web address is going to yahoo or hotmail. This is may seem like a little thing but it could cost you a lot of sales.
3. If you have your own Domain address you can give it its own IP address. The easiest way we can explain the importance of this is that search engine sees that all of these websites are neighbors. Just like in a sub-division where you may buy a home if one neighbor does something bad it could drive the value of every house on the street down. In much the same manner if a search engine sees one of your neighboring websites doing something wrong it could drive the value of your site down in the search engines eyes.
4. Last but not lease some website directories will not list your website if it doesn’t have it owns domain name.
